SLCPD Investigating Assault in Downtown Salt Lake City, 6 People InjuredSALT LAKE CITY — Officers and detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department are investigating a physical fight that resulted in six people being hurt. At this time, there is no reason to suggest any sort of threat to our community. “I want to recognize the response from our police officers,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. “Several of our officers provided immediate, life-saving measures to the victims. This type of incident is extraordinarily rare for our city. I know our detectives are working quickly to determine the motive for this incident, but I am relieved to know that based on the preliminary investigation this was not a random attack.” This investigation began at 1:26 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, when SLC911 received multiple calls of a fight and stabbing at a funeral home, located at 372 East 100 South. Officers arrived and found four people injured. Paramedics took all four people to local hospitals. Their injuries range from minor to life-threatening. Preliminary information provided to the Salt Lake City Police Department initially suggested at least one of the four people had been shot. However, since the SLCPD’s press conference, when that information was publicly released, doctors have been unable to confirm the cause of injury to the person who was thought to have a gunshot wound. Doctors are still in surgery. Based on the preliminary information, some sort of fight started between several individuals at the funeral home on 100 South. Early into the investigation, officers received information about a car leaving the area of 300 East 100 South at a high rate of speed just after the initial incident. Officers found a car matching the description provided by witnesses near 49 West 300 South and safely took three people into custody. Of the three people detained near 49 West 300 South: ● Paramedics took two people to the hospital. Both have been released. ● Detectives detained the third person in the car for questioning. There is no evidence to suggest anyone in the car had been stabbed or shot. At this point, no arrests have been made. Officers have secured the crime scenes to allow detectives and technicians with the SLCPD’s Crime Lab Unit to process the scene and collect evidence. Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Violent Crime and Robbery Squad and Gang Unit are assisting with this investigation. All future updates will be provided via news releases and posted on the SLCPD’s social media pages and its website.
