SLCPD Invokes OICI Protocol Following Deadly Shooting

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department invoked the Officer-Involved-Critical Incident (OICI) protocol following a deadly shooting.

This investigation started at 2:24 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, when SLC911 received information about a man with a weapon at 875 South State Street.

The name and age of the suspect have not been confirmed.

The following contains preliminary information and is a summarization of the facts known to the department at the time of release. There are several investigations underway related to this incident. As those investigations proceed, additional information may develop that could result in some of this information becoming out of date.

Upon their arrival, officers found the suspect in the parking lot. The suspect had a weapon, challenged officers, and refused to comply with their orders.

Four (4) Salt Lake City Police officers fired shots.

Officers and paramedics attempted to provide first aid, but the man died on scene.

No other injuries were reported.

“The public may never fully realize or understand the volatile, dangerous, and often unpredictable situations our officers face,” said Chief Mike Brown. “This investigation will gather additional facts, but I am relieved there were no other physical injuries to our officers or other community members. The safety of our city remains our number one priority.”

The four officers involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is a standard procedure.

OICI Protocol Team 4 (West Jordan Police) is leading this investigation.

Several photos from the scene are being released. Media may use this photo with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

There is no other information available for release at this time.
