SLCPD Promotes Safe Driving Practices During Distracted Driving Awareness Month

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is reminding community members to be safe and responsible on roadways during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2022, approximately 3,300 people were killed and nearly 290,000 people were injured in crashes involving distracted driving.

In 2023, 17 people died in traffic-related crashes in Salt Lake City.

With over 700 centerline miles of roads and 8500 intersections in Salt Lake City, it is critical for drivers to eliminate all distractions when operating a motor vehicle.

Distracted driving is any activity that takes a driver’s attention away from the road. These activities include, but are not limited to:

●       Using a phone for any means (talk, text, directions)

●       Consuming foods and beverages

●       Grooming

●       Adjusting radios and other electronic devices

The Salt Lake City Police Department is reminding community members of the following safe driving practices:

●       Do not use your phone until you reach your final destination

●       If you cannot wait to make a call or text, pull over in a safe and legal place

●       Set up GPS devices before leaving

●       Be aware of your surroundings

Community members who witness distracted or reckless driving should call 801-799-3000 and be prepared to provide information such as: vehicle description, driver description, and last known direction of travel.
