SLCPD Detectives Investigating Shooting, Arrest Aggravated Assault SuspectSALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit have safely arrested a 20-year-old man who is accused of shooting a 27-year-old man. This investigation started at 2:37 a.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2024, when SLC911 received information about a shooting that just occurred near 1500 North Mandalay Road. When officers arrived, they learned someone had driven the 27-year-old patient to a hospital. Doctors have upgraded the patient’s injuries from life-threatening to critical but stable. During the investigation, detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit identified the accused shooter. On Thursday, July 18, 2024, detectives, with the assistance of the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) safely took the suspect into custody near 500 North Redwood Road. Detectives then executed a court-authorized search warrant at the suspect’s home in West Valley City. The suspect, identified as Abdiaziz Ibrahim, is currently being held in the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a no-bail hold. He is charged with felony discharge of a firearm resulting in bodily injury, aggravated assault resulting in bodily injury, and being a Category 1 restricted person in possession of a firearm. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos. The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit is essential in combating gang-related crimes within the city. Comprised of highly trained, uniformed officers and detectives, the unit works closely with patrol divisions and other specialty squads to gather intelligence and prioritize efforts in disrupting gang and gun violence through education, prevention, and enforcement.
