SLCPD Investigating Critical Injury Crash in DowntownSALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a crash that critically injured a 35-year-old man. This investigation started at 11:44 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2024, when SLC911 took reports of a crash at 400 South State Street. Officers found two cars heavily damaged blocking the road. Inside one of the cars, officers found a man critically injured. Detectives believe the man did not have a seatbelt on when the crash happened. Paramedics took him to the hospital in critical condition. Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe the 35-year-old ran a red light while traveling east on 400 South and collided with a car traveling north on State Street. The crash resulted in a closure of the intersection and TRAX being disrupted for several hours. Aside from the 35-year-old man, no other injuries were reported. SLCPD detectives are working to determine whether impairment and excessive speeds are factors in the crash. The Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene. The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (CAR) Unit, part of a multi-jurisdictional task force, specializes in investigating crashes with severe injuries or death in the Salt Lake Valley. SLCPD CAR detectives are highly trained in areas such as collision examination, speed analysis, vehicle dynamics, and evidence collection. They meticulously map crash scenes, analyze vehicle and occupant movement, and manage cases from evidence collection to prosecution. Their work helps ensures thorough and accurate investigations, collaborating with other regional law enforcement agencies to handle the most serious crashes effectively.
