SLCPD Announces Parking Restrictions Around Public Safety Building to Improve Accessibility

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) will start new parking restrictions at the Public Safety Building (PSB), located at 475 South 300 East, to address protracted accessibility concerns for PSB visitors and community members.

Effective Sunday, December 1, 2024, parking on People’s Way (approximately 420 South) and the city’s east visitor parking will be restricted to permitted parking for people who have official business at the PSB.

These areas will no longer be available for non-permitted use, to include residential or business parking.

In 2020, two new apartment buildings opened around the Public Safety Building bringing a heavy increase in people parking in areas designated for PSB parking. A third apartment is expected to open in 2025.

Over the years, the SLCPD worked to increase signage, education, and occasionally enforcement – yet parking issues persisted. Community members, including crime victims, reported difficulty finding parking when coming to the PSB.

Effective Sunday, December 1, 2024, anyone needing a pass will need to obtain a permit from the front desk officer at the PSB.

Community members may use on-street paid parking on 500 South and 300 East as another option.

Marked media vehicles will be exempt from enforcement but are required to have appropriate vehicle markings/branding or media in-dash placards.

Journalists driving personally owned vehicles will need media in-dash placards or obtain a PSB parking permit at the front desk or by contacting a Public Information Officer (PIO) from either SLCPD or the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

Warning signs and instructions are now posted on both People’s Way and the east visitor parking lot to remind community members of these upcoming changes.

The PSB will enforce 24-hour towing in these areas, seven days a week, year-round.

Cars without appropriate PSB permits will be towed at the owner’s expense, including employees of the PSB who are driving unmarked or personally owned vehicles.

Businesses in the area are encouraged to share this information with their tenants and customers.

All community members are reminded that Blair Street has designated no parking / stopping signs posted. Delivery drivers and rideshare drivers are not permitted to stop on Blair Street.

The Public Safety Building serves as the hub for public safety in Salt Lake City, bringing together critical services under one roof. It is home to the Salt Lake City Police Department, Salt Lake City Fire Department, Salt Lake City 911, and Salt Lake City Emergency Management. This collaboration ensures a unified approach to public safety and responding effectively to emergencies.
