SLCPD Officers Arrest Man in Possession of Firearm During Traffic Stop

SALT LAKE CITY — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) have safely arrested a 26-year-old man after they found him driving a car with an expired registration, in possession of a firearm, and having a five-year-old child unrestrained in his car.

This investigation started at 9:51 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2024, when a Salt Lake City Police officer saw a someone driving a car on Redwood Road, just south of North Temple. The car had an expired registration.

The officer conducted a traffic stop and during the investigation, found the driver, identified as 26-year-old Wilmer Torres Guedez, to have an outstanding warrant.

During their investigation, officers learned Torres Guedez had criminal history that prevented him from being in possession of a firearm.

During the on-scene investigation, officers found a handgun in Torres Guedez’s possession.

Officers booked Torres Guedez into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges that include being in unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon as a restricted person, operating a vehicle without insurance, driving without registering a vehicle/driving with an expired registration, and failure to provide a child restraint device for a child under the age of eight.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
