SLCPD Investigating Hit-and-Run Crash, Suspect Arrested
SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is investigating a hit-and-run crash that resulted in serious injuries to a person in the Granary District Alliance neighborhood.
This investigation started around 3:30 a.m. when Salt Lake City 9-1-1 received information about a hit-and-run crash near 700 South 600 West. The person driving the suspect car, a black Audi, did not stop.
Based on the preliminary investigation, a Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) trooper was in the area and may have witnessed the crash. The UHP trooper tried to stop the driver, but the driver escaped.
SLCPD is investigating whether the driver of the Audi was street racing before or during the crash.
Private security guards happened to follow the suspect from a distance and called UHP dispatch.
The security guards told UHP dispatch they found the suspect’s car near 1820 West 465 North. At some point, the suspect and security guards got into an argument.
The security guards detained the suspect until SLCPD and UHP arrived on scene. Officers have determined the driver to be impaired.
Officers and troopers are now working to determine the appropriate criminal charges in this case.
At the time of publishing, the name and age of the suspect are not available.
The person initially involved in the hit-and-run crash—who stepped into the street, possibly to cross—is a 31-year-old man.
Paramedics took him to the hospital in serious but stable condition.
The Salt Lake City Police Department would like to thank the Utah Highway Patrol for their assistance with this investigation.
Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
