SLCPD Releases Body-Worn Camera Footage Following OICI Protocol Activation

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, in compliance with Salt Lake City ordinance 2.10.200, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is releasing body-worn camera (BWC) footage from a case that resulted in an officer involved critical incident (OICI) protocol activation.

“This was a very quickly unfolding situation and I am incredibly relieved that our officer wasn’t injured more severely,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. “While the investigation is still ongoing, what I can say is that this certainly was a dangerous situation that resulted an injury to our officer and that posed a serious and imminent threat to his life and potentially the lives of others.”

This is the second SLCPD OICI protocol activation for 2025.

The 32-year-old suspect in this case is identified as Chandler Grillone.

Grillone died at the hospital.

Based on the preliminary investigation, a SLCPD officer conducted a traffic stop at approximately 1:41 a.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2025, near 375 South 765 West.

During that traffic stop, Grillone, who was not involved, approached the officer on scene while the officer was in his car.

Body-worn camera video shows Grillone confronting, challenging, and attacking the SLCPD officer.

The SLCPD officer gave multiple commands to Grillone—who had a weapon.

During the incident, after being given repeated commands to stop, Grillone began pointing at and walking toward the occupied police car, and the SLCPD officer fired at least one round.

The occupant of the police car was a community member on a ride-along with the officer.

Officers recovered a weapon from Grillone on scene.

Because the investigation is ongoing, the SLCPD cannot provide any additional details about the weapon Grillone had.

It was initially reported that there were no additional injuries.

However, the SLCPD later learned that the officer involved in this incident received an injury consistent with a sharp-edged object.

The officer’s injury is not considered life-threatening.

There is no 9-1-1 call associated to this case.

Portions of the footage is redacted to protect personal identifiable information.

No further information can be released on this case at this time.
