SLCPD Investigating Shots Fired in Central 9th Neighborhood, Two People Arrested, Stolen Gun Recovered
SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is investigating a shots fired incident in the Central 9th neighborhood.
“Although our investigation is ongoing, this shooting appears to have been a reckless act of violence,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. “While we try to prevent violence from occurring, when it does, we will conduct thorough investigations to hold offenders accountable and to help ensure that Salt Lake City remains safe.”
This investigation started approximately 11:26 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2025, when SLC911 received several calls from community members reporting a burst of gunfire and sounds of people fighting near 625 South Washington Street.
SLCPD officers arrived but did not find any active fighting and did not find any gunshot victims.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene with several people arguing, which led to the shooting.
After the shooting, those involved, including several witnesses, left the area in cars.
Detectives with the SLCPD’s Gang Unit, while responding to the scene, saw a car matching the description provided by witnesses leaving at a high rate of speed.
Detectives conducted a traffic stop near Bryant Avenue and State Street in the Ballpark neighborhood.
During their investigation, gang detectives recovered a firearm that they later determined to be stolen.
Detectives arrested two men. At this time, their names are not available for release.
Officers booked one of the suspects into jail on charges of being in possession of a weapon by a restricted person, possession of a stolen firearm, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Officers booked the other suspect into jail on charges of possession of a weapon by a restricted person and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit is essential in combating gang-related crimes. The unit of skilled and highly trained officers and detectives collaborates with patrol divisions and other specialty squads to gather intelligence and prevent gang and gun violence through education, prevention, and enforcement. The unit’s understanding of gang culture allows them to disrupt operations and prevent violence effectively. By working proactively and with various partners, the Gang Unit enhances public safety, fosters community trust, and reduces gang activity in the city.
The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
