SLCPD Hosts Award Ceremony to Honor Officers, Community Members

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) proudly recognized outstanding acts of bravery, service, and dedication at its quarterly Public Safety Awards ceremony.

This event honors both community members and police officers who have gone above and beyond to keep Salt Lake City safe.

“Public safety is not just about responding to emergencies—it’s about leadership,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. “It’s about action. It’s about those who refuse to simply standby when something needs to be done and when someone needs help. Every person receiving an award today represents that spirit.”

Partner in Public Safety Award – The SLCPD’s Partner in Public Safety Award recognizes individuals who have taken extraordinary steps to assist law enforcement in ensuring public safety.

Ned Maxfield was honored for his decisive actions while working at a parking garage. Upon hearing glass breaking, he investigated and discovered a person attempting to steal tactical equipment from a federal law enforcement vehicle. His quick response and immediate call to police helped ensure the suspect was arrested before they could get away.

Eric Champeau, owner of Chick-fil-A Sugarhouse, received the award for his ongoing support of the Salt Lake City Police Department. For years, Eric and his team have shown appreciation for SLCPD officers, including providing breakfast at the annual Back to School Pay-It-Forward event. His generosity strengthens the bond between police and our community.

Dave Seljestad, a Salt Lake resident and local chiropractor, was recognized for his dedication to training SLCPD recruits and current officers. As a SMART Defense instructor, MMA referee, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Dave has volunteered twice a week at the SLCPD’s Training Unit for the past two years, helping new officers develop crucial defensive tactics skills and making sure officers stay current with their physical fitness.

Civilian Service Award – The SLCPD’s Civilian Service Award recognizes community members who have demonstrated selflessness and bravery in assisting others during critical situations.

Rachel Genther was honored for her quick and compassionate response during a traffic crash. When a motorcyclist was thrown from their bike, Rachel used her medical training to keep their airway open and control the bleeding until first responders arrived. Her immediate actions made a difference in saving a life.

His willingness to act in a dangerous situation exemplifies true community partnership.

Lifesaving Award

Officer Gabriel Paulino was awarded one of the SLCPD’s highest honors, the Lifesaving Award, for his heroic actions during a shooting incident in January 2024. Responding to reports of gunfire, Officer Paulino found a victim bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound. He quickly applied a tourniquet and maintained pressure on the wound until paramedics arrived, playing a critical role in saving the victim’s life.

Police Medal

Detective Dale Nicholas received the Police Medal, one of SLCPD’s most distinguished awards, for his bravery during an armed confrontation. While on patrol, Detective Nicholas and his partner, Officer Jesus Rivera, spotted a reckless driver fleeing a shooting scene. After a pursuit, the suspect’s vehicle became high-centered on an embankment. As officers approached, the suspect pointed a gun and opened fire. Detective Nicholas and his partner took immediate action to stop the threat while maintaining composure under extreme pressure.
