SLCPD Officers Arrest Man Accused of Illegal Drug Possession, Recover Knife

SALT LAKE CITY —Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s (SLCPD) Central Patrol Division have safely arrested a 36-year-old man, confiscating suspected drugs and an item classified as a dangerous weapon during a trespassing investigation.

This investigation started around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, when SLCPD officers responded to a 9-1-1 call of reports of a man criminally trespassing near 43 East 400 South under a posted, city-issued, no trespassing sign.

Officers identified the man as 36-year-old Brady Smith.

During the investigation, officers recovered a locked container with approximately 60 suspected fentanyl pills, a fixed blade knife, and cash.

During the investigation, Smith reportedly said he had ingested fentanyl pills prior to officer contact. Paramedics responded and took Smith to the hospital with no immediate signs of an emergency.

After being evaluated at a hospital, officers booked Smith into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a weapon by a restricted person, providing false information to a police officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, and criminal trespass.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
