SLCPD Officers Investigating Aggravated Assault in Liberty Wells Neighborhood
SALT LAKE CITY — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Liberty Patrol Division have safely arrested a 31-year-old man accused of hitting a woman with his car inside a parking lot in the Liberty Wells neighborhood.
This investigation started around 1:54 p.m. on Friday, February 14, 2025, when SLC911 received a call about a reported assault at 604 East 1300 South.
Officers learned 31-year-old Calvin Smith allegedly got into an argument over a parking spot.
According to court documents, the victim told officers she stood in a parking spot to save it for a family member, who was turning around nearby.
Smith is accused of seeing the parking spot, making a U-turn, and driving toward the woman.
When the woman told Smith she was saving the parking spot, Smith is accused of accelerating toward her, stopping just inches away. The preliminary investigation suggests Smith then reversed and accelerated again, which resulted in his car hitting the victim’s arm as she moved out of the way.
The impact caused minor injuries to the 61-year-old woman.
Officers spoke with an employee who reported seeing the exchange between Smith and the woman and then seeing Smith allegedly accelerate toward the woman as she moved.
Officers arrested Smith and booked him into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a charge of aggravated assault.
Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
