SLCPD Detectives Arrest 20-Year-Old Accused of Being in Unlawful Possession of a FirearmSALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) have safely arrested a 20-year-old man who is accused of being in illegal possession of a firearm. At approximately 3:17 a.m. on February 21, 2025, detectives with the SLCPD’s Gang Unit booked 20-year-old Iram Garcia into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a charge of unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person. According to court documents, Garcia, a documented gang member, was previously convicted of as a juvenile and is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. Detectives in this case obtained a search warrant for Garcia’s residence, where they recovered a firearm identical to one, he had allegedly been seen carrying, according to court documents. According to court documents, the court has considered additional conditions for continued detention, citing his prior history of evading law enforcement and statements suggesting a willingness to engage in violence. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
