SLCPD SWAT Officers Safely Arrest Suspect in DV Standoff
SALT LAKE CITY — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Pioneer Patrol Division, Crisis Negotiation Team, and SWAT Team safely arrest a man who barricaded himself inside his home after allegedly threatening a roommate with a gun. This investigation started around 8 a.m. on March 7, 2025, when SLC911 received a report that 40-year-old Colin Smith had pointed a gun at his roommate. The roommate got out of the home safely and called 9-1-1. Smith refused to come out when officers arrived. Additional resources, including the SLCPD Crisis Negotiation Team and the SLCPD SWAT Team responded to help. Negotiators contacted Smith and eventually he stepped outside the home where he spoke with SWAT officers and surrendered. Officers took him safely into custody. After searching the home, detectives found multiple firearms. Smith is expected to be booked into jail on charges of aggravated assault and criminal mischief. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos. The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change. Photos from the scene is being released. Media may use this photo with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
