SLCPD Bike Squad Arrest 39-Year-Old Man Following Foot Chase; Suspect Accused of Drug-Distribution

SALT LAKE CITY — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Bike Squad safely arrested a 39-year-old man who is accused of distributing drugs in the Poplar Grove neighborhood.

This investigation occurred around 11 p.m. on March 1, 2025, when officers conducted a stop on 800 West, just north of North Temple.

This area is a known hotspot for drug activity. In response, SLCPD officers have increased their patrols.

Just prior to the stop, officers found several people appearing to be using drugs.

When officers turned on their emergency lights, 39-year-old Basim Ali immediately ran away but officers caught up to him and safely took him into custody.

Upon searching Ali, officers discovered multiple small packages containing a white, crystalline substance that tested positive for cocaine and methamphetamine, according to court documents. Officers also found foil-wrapped substances, three marijuana vape pens still in original packaging, a small amount of plant marijuana, and a clear glass pipe, commonly used for methamphetamine consumption.

Officers determined Ali had been arrested on similar felony distribution charges less than a week prior to this incident.

Given this alleged pattern of behavior, SLCPD officers requested additional detention conditions.

Officers booked Ali into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of distribution of a controlled substance (x4), failure to stop at the command of a police officer, and use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
