SLCPD Detectives, DEA and SBI Seize More Than 8,000 Suspected Fentanyl Pills; Two People Arrested
SALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s (SLCPD) Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Utah State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) have seized more than 8,000 suspected fentanyl pills and other suspected drugs, including cocaine and marijuana as part of a coordinated law enforcement effort. Law enforcement recently conducted an undercover operation at Cottonwood Park related to drug crimes, according to court documents. At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, officers conducted a traffic stop at Bridgton Drive and South Molly Drive in Magna. During the investigation, a law enforcement narcotics dog indicated the presence of suspected narcotics inside the car. Law enforcement obtained a court-authorized search warrant as part of the investigation. Detectives executed the warrant near 6500 West 3900 South in West Valley City. During the investigation, law enforcement seized 8,200 suspected fentanyl pills, suspected cocaine, suspected marijuana and $28,186 in cash. Detectives arrested 27-year-old Santos Alvarez-Cantor and 42-year-old Santos Alvarenga. Law enforcement booked Alvarez-Cantor into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance and four counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Law enforcement booked Alvarenga into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a charge of distribution of a controlled substance. The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homeless Resource Center (HRC) Squad, assigned to the Liberty Patrol Division, assisted with this case. The Salt Lake City Police Department recognizes the assistance of the DEA and SBI for their dedicated efforts to help disrupt drug activity in Salt Lake City. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos. The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change. ### |
