SLCPD SWAT, Crisis Negotiators Safely Resolve Barricade Incident on North Temple Street near SLC Airport

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s (SLCPD) SWAT team, working in coordination with the SLCPD’s Crisis Negotiation Team, safely took a 64-year-old man into custody following a barricade situation at an apartment complex near the Salt Lake City International Airport.

This investigation began at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2025, when SLC911 received a report of an assault at 2333 West North Temple Street.

SLCPD patrol officers responded to the scene and began an investigation.

Officers learned the suspect had allegedly assaulted another resident of the apartment complex and had recently been evicted.

The suspect then barricaded himself inside his former apartment unit and refused to communicate with officers or surrender.

During the investigation, officers determined the victim received serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers developed probable cause to arrest the suspect and obtained a court-authorized warrant for his arrest.

Around 1:15 p.m., after hours of attempted communication and investigation, officers used a keycard to enter the room.

SWAT officers successfully took the suspect into custody without further incident.

The suspect will be booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.

His name will not be released until that occurs.

To help ensure public safety during the operation, eastbound traffic on West Temple Street was temporarily closed.

All road closures are now lifted.

No officers or additional community members were injured during the response.

Several photos from the scene are being released. Media may use these photos with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s SWAT Team is specially trained and equipped to handle high-risk situations that pose a serious threat to public safety. The team responds to armed barricaded subjects, hostage situations, high-risk warrant service, dignitary protection, and other critical incidents. Using advanced tactics and specialized equipment, SWAT officers work to resolve dangerous situations while minimizing risk to the community and fellow officers.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
