SLCPD Issues Community Reminder About Recurring Impersonation ScamSALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is reminding community members to be aware of phone scams involving people falsely claiming to be law enforcement officers. On Monday, April 21, 2025, an SLCPD officer took a report from a Midvale resident who said they received a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer. The caller identified himself as “David Betz.” The SLCPD does not have anyone by that name employed in any capacity. The caller attempted to extort money from the victim by falsely claiming law enforcement action would be taken. Fortunately, the resident did not fall for the scam and reported the incident to the SLCPD. Community members should remember: · No legitimate law enforcement agency will ever demand money, financial information, or gift cards over the phone, via email, or text/chat. · Officers will never threaten you or someone you know with jail time to extort payment. · Scammers can sound convincing and may even use AI voice technology to impersonate others. If you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be with the Salt Lake City Police Department, hang up immediately and report the incident. If you’re unsure whether the call was legitimate, you can always verify by contacting non-emergency dispatch at 801-799-3000. Our officers follow strict procedures that can be confirmed through official channels. The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
