SLCPD Reports Mostly Peaceful Demonstration in Downtown, 1 Person Arrested

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) arrested one man following an assault that occurred during a large demonstration in downtown.

“We’re thankful that tonight’s demonstration remained mostly peaceful,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd. “We also want to thank those organizers and participants who made a genuine effort to keep things lawful and respectful – that is our expectation and doing so respects the values of our community. As there are future demonstrations, we expect everyone to follow the law and to avoid confrontations that could turn violent.”

“I also appreciate the hard work of our Salt Lake City police officers and those from allied agencies for their professionalism and coordination. Our top priority is public safety, which includes doing everything we can to keep safe while protecting our community.”

Around 5:30 p.m., on Thursday June 12, 2025, several hundred people began arriving at the City and County Building, located at 451 South State Street.

The SLCPD, preliminarily, estimates the crowd to be more than 1,000 at its maximum.

SLCPD officers were on site to provide public safety support, help with traffic control, and to help make sure the rights of all participants to peacefully, and lawfully, assemble were protected.

Early in the evening, several small fights broke out and SLCPD Public Liaison Officers (PLOs) intervened to break up those fights, which remain under investigation.

Around 7 p.m., the group began marching on State Street, blocking all northbound lanes.

SLCPD officers observed property damage on 300 East between 100 and 200 South involving a parked, unoccupied Telsa vehicle. The property damage will be documented and investigated.

Throughout the night, the crowd began to slowly disperse.

Around 8 p.m., the group returned to the City and County Building.

Several participants worked to mitigate and defuse several agitators provoking fights.

Around 9 p.m., officers saw a fight break out near 400 South State Street, which resulted in one arrest.

At this point, the names and charging information of the person arrested is not available.

The SLCPD continues to encourage open communication between officers and event organizers to help ensure the safety of all community members.

The SLCPD remains committed to protecting freedom of speech while maintaining public order.

Additional demonstrations are expected throughout the month, and the SLCPD remains prepared to support peaceful expression in accordance with its mission to preserve life, protect property, and promote public safety for all.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
