SLCPD Releases Body-Worn Camera Footage from May 27, 2025 Officer Involved Critical IncidentSALT LAKE CITY — Today, in compliance with Salt Lake City ordinance 2.10.200, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is releasing body-worn camera (BWC) footage from a case that resulted in an officer involved critical incident (OICI). The following contains preliminary information and is a summarization of the facts known to the SLCPD at the time of release. Several investigations are actively underway, and additional details may emerge as those investigations progress. The suspect in this case is identified as 60-year-old Christian Thomas Allen. “This appears to have been a fast-moving, unpredictable, and dangerous situation,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd. “Our officers made a split-second decision to protect themselves and others in the home under extremely volatile circumstances involving a potentially life-threatening call.” “Domestic violence cases are among the most unpredictable and high-risk situations we can encounter. We recognize the difficult decisions our officers were faced with during this response. As this case moves forward, we remain committed to supporting both our officers and providing the family of this domestic violence incident with the appropriate resources and assistance they need,” Chief Redd added. On May 27, 2025, at 12:13 a.m., SLCPD officers responded to a domestic-violence-burglary in-progress call for service at a residence located at 2963 South Judith Street. The caller, C.A., reported that her ex-husband, Allen, violating a protective order, was breaking into the home, and threatening harm. The caller said she and her two teenage children were hiding in a locked bedroom. The 9-1-1 call picked up some of Allen’s statements, including: “You [expletive] did this to me. [inaudible]. I went down to Chevron and poured gasoline all over myself. I got gasoline all over me and I’m going to light myself on fire and burn the house [inaudible]. This is your [expletive] fault.” The smell of gasoline was reported inside the house by C.A. to the SLC911 emergency call-taker. Multiple officers responded to the scene under a Code 3 response, meaning they had their lights and sirens activated. Upon arrival, the first officer identified a white van with its lights on in the driveway. The officer called out plate information. Once backup units arrived, officers set up containment around the house and moved toward the front and back of the home. A subject was seen inside the residence by one of the officers, according to body-worn camera footage. Officers forced entry through both the front and back doors nearly simultaneously after hearing sounds of a disturbance and fighting inside, as captured on body-worn camera footage. They announced their presence as they entered. Inside, the suspect, later identified as Allen, is seen on body-worn camera footage holding a large knife. Officers issued repeated loud commands to drop the weapon. Allen advanced toward officers with the knife raised. Two SLCPD officers discharged their firearms. Officers immediately call out “shots fired” and begin a protective sweep of the home. The family hiding was located, safely escorted out, and triaged by other responding officers. Immediately after the shooting, officers provided medical aid by applying chest seals and performing CPR. Officers called for additional medical support. Salt Lake City Fire personnel and Gold Cross Ambulance arrived shortly after and took over life-saving efforts. Allen was critically wounded and died on scene. No physical injuries were reported to the victim or her teenage children. Officers identified the suspect’s knife and secured it. Officers also coordinated emotional support and resources for the involved family, assisted the family in retrieving personal items, and managed scene preservation, including ventilating the house due to gasoline inside. The source of the gasoline and how Allen arrived at the house with the van remain under investigation. It should be noted that C.A. reported during the 9-1-1 call that her ex-husband did not have a car. Protocol Team 2, led by the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake, is conducting the outside and independent investigation. The officers who discharged their firearms remain on paid administrative leave, per standard procedure. The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change. Link: https://slcgov.sharefile.com/d-s223fb1ce1e144c8d8d985971155eb213
