SLCPD Initiates Officer Involved Critical Incident (OICI) Protocol

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) initiated the officer involved critical incident (OICI) protocol.

The following contains preliminary information and is a summarization of the facts known to the department at the time of release. There are several investigations underway related to this incident. As those investigations proceed, additional information may develop that could result in some of this information becoming out of date.

“It is remarkable that none of our officers or community members were hurt during this dangerous incident,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd. “Our officers had to make split-second decisions to stop an immediate threat. Their response was courageous and focused on protecting our community.”

Based on the preliminary investigation, this incident began at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, 2025, when a tow truck driver reported someone shooting at him multiple times near North Redwood Road and West North Temple.

The suspect, later identified as a 44-year-old man, drove off.

The tow truck driver told emergency dispatchers with SLC911 that as the suspect drove off, he continued shooting.

Multiple SLCPD units responded and began looking for the suspect.

Once officers found the vehicle, they attempted to stop the car, but the driver did not comply.

The driver continued shooting from his vehicle.

Officers initiated a pursuit.

During the pursuit, the suspect continued shooting at officers.  At least three SLCPD patrol cars were damaged by gunfire.

At some point, officers returned fire.

Officers used a PIT maneuver on I-80 just south of the airport near North Temple Street, bringing the suspect’s vehicle to a stop.

Officers took the suspect into custody.

There is no longer a public safety threat.

Paramedics have taken the man to the hospital in critical condition where he remains under police watch while receiving medical care.

There are several road closures associated with this incident, including:

·       I-80 from Bangerter Highway to I-215.

·       Bangerter Highway from California Avenue to I-80.

There is no estimated time of reopening. Media and community members are encouraged to monitor the Utah Department of Transportation’s website for updates.

The SLCPD would like to acknowledge the outside agencies that responded to help with this case including the Utah Highway Patrol who assisted with the pursuit and shutting down traffic to prevent any injuries to community members.

Per department policy, the officer involved critical incident protocol was enacted.

The SLCPD is required, under Utah state law, to invoke the OICI protocol when a case meets the definition of a qualifying OICI incident.

OICI Protocol Team 4, led by the West Jordan Police Department is leading the investigation.

The three involved SLCPD officers and two SLCPD sergeants have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard in any OICI.

Pursuant to SLC City ordinance, the SLCPD will release body-worn camera footage within 10 business days.

Media staging is at 2400 West North Temple Street.

A SLCPD Public Information Officer (PIO) is on scene and has briefed media.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
