SLCPD Seeks Help Identifying Suspect in July 4 Firearm Discharge Incident

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is asking for help identifying the person or persons responsible for discharging a firearm into the air on the evening of July 4, 2025, during an annual fireworks celebration at The Gateway shopping center.

At 11:21 p.m. on July 4, 2025, the SLCPD received information about a person injured during the fireworks event.

During the investigation, officers identified a second injured person.

Officers located a small-caliber bullet near one of the injured people.

Detectives believe the injuries were caused by two bullets fired into the sky that fell with enough velocity to strike and injure two individuals. Thankfully, the injuries were non-life-threatening.

“We’re really lucky no one was more seriously hurt or worse,” said Salt Lake City Police Deputy Chief Bill Manzanares. “We need the community’s help to figure out who did this so we can hold them accountable. Firing a gun into the air like that is both reckless and incredibly dangerous.”

Detectives have reviewed surveillance video from around The Gateway shopping center but have not yet been able to identify a suspect.

Based on the trajectory and evidence collected, detectives believe the person who discharged the firearm may have been outside The Gateway shopping center, in the area between 500 West and 400 West, from North Temple to 100 South.

Investigators are asking anyone who heard gunshots or saw suspicious behavior in that area between 8 and 10 p.m. on July 4, 2025, to call 801-799-3000.

A map of the area detectives believe the gunfire may have originated from is included below.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
