SLCPD Arrests Man for Stabbing A 74-Year-Old Man in Pioneer Park

SALT LAKE CITY — Patrol officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department safely arrested a 33-year-old man who is accused of stabbing a 74-year-old man in Pioneer Park.

This investigation started at 7:58 p.m. on Sunday, August 11, 2025, when SLC911 received a call about a possible stabbing at a Pioneer Park at 350 South 300 West.

When officers arrived at the park, they found a man who had been stabbed. The victim was treated by Salt Lake City Fire and transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary information indicates the victim was sitting on a park bench when the suspect stabbed him. The relationship between the two men and the events leading up to the stabbing remain under investigation

Officers found the suspect, Alex Jones, several blocks away where he was safely taken into custody.

Jones was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a charge of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

Anyone with information on this case, including those with photos or video, is asked to call 801-799-3000 or submit an anonymous tip using the CityProtect App and reference case number 25-184452.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
