SALT LAKE CITY —Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad arrested a 36-year-old man accused of murder following a homicide investigation in Sugar House. This investigation started at 5:06 a.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2025, when officers were dispatched to a possible overdose near 2100 South Lincoln Street. Officers and Salt Lake City Fire Department personnel arrived and found 58-year-old Steve Kallas on the ground near a motor home. Kallas died on scene. While attempting to provide aid to the victim fire department personnel located a wound consistent with a gunshot wound. Homicide Detectives found video surveillance showing a person exiting a car near the motor home at approximately 3:30 a.m. The person fires several rounds from a gun into the motor home and appears to try and light a Molotov cocktail. Kallas runs across the street and appears to spray “bear spray” towards the person near the car. The person fires several more rounds towards Kallas while Kallas is running away before getting back in the car and driving away. Detectives identified the person in the car as 36-year-old Nathaniel Stockton and learned Stockton had threatened Kallas over a debt. Homicide detectives, with the help of the SLCPD Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) and the Salt Lake City SWAT Team, safely took Stockton into custody near 2700 West and 7800 South. Stockton had methamphetamine with him when he was arrested. Detectives executed a search warrant and found two firearms in Stockton’s car. Detectives booked Stockton into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated arson, ten counts of felony discharge of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm by a restricted person. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. ### |
