SLCPD Releases Body-Worn Camera Footage Following OICI Protocol Activation

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, in compliance with Salt Lake City ordinance 2.10.200, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is releasing body-worn camera (BWC) footage from a case that resulted in an officer involved critical incident (OICI) protocol activation. The BWC being released is from two of the officers who were originally dispatched to the event and only captures audio of the shooting.

On December 13, 2025, at 2:57 a.m., SLC911 received a call reporting a fight in progress at 149 West Pierpont Avenue.

The caller told the dispatcher “everyone had guns” before hanging up. Two additional callers also reported fighting on Pierpont Avenue.

Multiple SLCPD officers responded to assist and searched the area for victims, witnesses, suspects and evidence of a fight.

At 3:00 a.m. an officer radioed that no active fighting was occurring.

At 3:11 a.m., body-worn cameras from the two officers recorded the sound of multiple gunshots. Officers sprinted toward the gunfire to investigate and look for victims

At the same time, officers near the Perry Hotel parking lot saw a white sedan speeding away. A rear passenger fired shots from the vehicle toward officers. One officer returned fire, discharging at least one round.

No officers or community members reported injuries.

Preliminary information indicates the involved officer had not been dispatched to the call and their body-worn camera had not yet been activated when shots were fired. SLCPD reviews all uses of force comprehensively, including body-worn camera activation compliance.

The department placed the involved officer on administrative leave, consistent with policy.

Protocol Team 3, led by the West Valley City Police Department, is conducting an independent investigation. We will also conduct an internal investigation, separate from the criminal process.

No further information can be released at this time.
