SLCPD Arrests 19-Year-Old Man Accused of Felony Commercial Obstruction, Drug Distribution, Assault

SALT LAKE CITY — As a part of an ongoing effort to address drug activity, officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) have arrested a 19-year-old man following a series of alleged criminal acts, including felony commercial obstruction, assault, and unlawful drug possession with intent to distribute.

This investigation started around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, when SLCPD officers responded to reports of a person causing a disturbance inside a convenience store near 300 East 400 South.

Witnesses told officers the suspect allegedly jumped behind the store counter, damaged property, and threatened an employee.

During the arrest, the suspect allegedly resisted by pulling away and kicking officers.

Officers reviewed video from inside the store that showed the suspect allegedly throwing food items and displays through the store, attempting to damage or remove the credit card payment device, and disrupting the normal operations of the business.

Officers are also reviewing reports that the suspect may have been involved in a separate incident prior to entering the store, where he allegedly punched a person—randomly—and blocked traffic.

Officers booked the suspect, Salman Yusuf, into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges that include felony commercial obstruction, assault by a prisoner, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, interfering with a peace officer, criminal trespass, intoxication, disorderly conduct, and criminal mischief.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
