SLCPD Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) Recovers Nearly 4,000 Suspected Fentanyl PillsSALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s (SLCPD) Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) safely arrested two people and recovered nearly 4,000 suspected fentanyl pills. “This case reflects our department’s commitment to investigating suspected drug-related crimes that can continue to pose a threat to public safety and public health,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. “Our detectives work hard to investigate suspected drug activity, reinforcing our commitment to keep Salt Lake City safe, and I want to acknowledge the work of our officers, detectives, and professional staff for doing this difficult job.” This investigation started when VCAT detectives developed information about possible fentanyl distribution occurring in Salt Lake City. On February 7, 2025, detectives arrested 24-year-old Danis Odail Ariano Cantor and 29-year-old Franklin Isamar Rodriguez Valle near 7th Avenue and N Street. During the arrest, detectives found approximately 3,900 suspected fentanyl pills and $973 in cash. Detectives booked both suspects into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a single count of being in unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. A photo of the suspected fentanyl pills seized is being released. Media may use this photo with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department. The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) is a specialized unit within the Salt Lake City Police Department focused on reducing violent crime by identifying and arresting violent criminals and fugitives. Operating under the Special Operations Division, VCAT works closely with investigators, patrol officers, and crime analysts to target high-crime areas and apprehend repeat offenders. VCAT uses intelligence-driven enforcement strategies to track and arrest individuals driving violent crime trends in Salt Lake City. Through proactive policing and data-driven strategies, VCAT plays a critical role in making our city safer. The inclusion of the unit conducting this investigation should not be interpreted as an indication that this case involves a violent offender or that the allegations suggest a history of violent crimes. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos. The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
