SLCPD Officers Arrests Man Accused of Being in Possession of Stolen Vehicle and Theft

SALT LAKE CITY — Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s (SLCPD) Liberty Patrol Division have safely arrested a 24-year-old man accused of being in possession of a stolen truck and stealing merchandise from a store in the Sugar House neighborhood.

This investigation started around 7:30 p.m. on February 11, 2025, when SLC911 received a call of a reported shoplift near 2210 South 1300 East.

Officers responded to the scene and began investigating.

During their investigation, officers learned the suspect allegedly used a stolen truck to drive to the store where he is accused of going inside the store and stealing clothes and shoes.

The suspect is also accused of giving officers a false name but was later identified as 24-year-old Jason Braithwaite.

Officers took Braithwaite to the Salt Lake County Jail and booked him for possession of a stolen vehicle, retail theft, providing false personal information to a police officer, possession of burglary tools, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
