SLCPD Recognizes World Social Work Day
SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is proudly recognizing World Social Work Day, a day dedicated to honoring the contributions of social workers in communities. The SLCPD recognizes public safety goes beyond traditional law enforcement. Many of the challenges our community faces—such as homelessness, mental health crises, and substance abuse—require a collaborative approach between police officers and social service professionals. The SLCPD is committed to integrating social work into policing through specialized programs that provide compassionate, community-based responses to those in crisis and need. The SLCPD was one of the first police departments in the country to embed social workers to work alongside officers to provide critical services. SLCPD social workers and other mental health experts work to safely and effectively bridge the gap between law enforcement and social services. The team offers direct support to people experiencing homelessness, mental health issues, and addiction. The SLCPD houses two specialized teams: · Community Connection Team (CCT): Social workers who provide short-term intervention, case management, housing assistance, and behavioral health navigation. · Crisis Intervention Team (CIT): Specially trained officers who respond to mental health crises with de-escalation techniques and referrals to appropriate care. Officers and social workers also work to connect people experiencing homelessness with essential resources, reducing reliance on emergency services. Since its inception in 2016, the CCT has helped thousands of people in need, diverting many from the criminal justice system and connecting them with long-term support. The SLCPD is also recognized as a Law Enforcement Mental Health Learning Site by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance. This designation highlights the SLCPD’s efforts in training officers, co-responding with social workers, and implementing evidence-based strategies to address mental health crises effectively. By working closely with caseworkers, therapists, and community partners, the SLCPD can help make sure people receive the care they need. The SLCPD recognizes that social workers in our city play an invaluable role in fostering safer and healthier communities. Their work with SLCPD demonstrates how law enforcement and social services can collaborate to create meaningful, long-term change. On World Social Work Day, Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd extends his appreciation to the dedicated social workers who help make Salt Lake City a more compassionate and resilient community. *Services offered include: Transportation, Housing Navigation, Substance Abuse, Mental Health, Medical Referral, Employment Resources, low impact engagement, and crisis de-escalation.
