SLCPD Investigating Double Homicide; Person of Interest in CustodySALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is investigating a double homicide in downtown. Officers have a person of interest in custody. There is no known threat to our community. This investigation began at approximately 12:33 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, when SLC911 received a call near 171 West 500 South. While on the phone, dispatchers learned a shooting had just occurred. SLCPD officers, Salt Lake City Fire, and Gold Cross Ambulance responded. Officers found two men with critical gunshot wounds. Officers provided life-saving aid and requested paramedics. Despite those efforts, both patients died on scene. Officers detained a person believed to be involved in the shooting. Although detectives are just beginning their preliminary investigation, which includes gathering details, speaking with witnesses, and reviewing any digital evidence, officers do not believe there is a threat to our community. The SLCPD is asking community members to avoid the south sidewalk of 500 South between West Temple and 200 West during the investigation. Media may stage across the street at 150 West 500 South on the sidewalk. Anyone with information about this case should call 801-799-3000. The SLCPD Homicide Squad will work with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the men’s name, age, cause of death and to notify next-of-kin. This incident marks Salt Lake City’s first and second homicides of 2025. The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad is Utah’s only full-time dedicated homicide unit. The squad investigates all homicides in the city, along with attended and unattended deaths, suspicious deaths, suicides, and missing persons cases. The team also handles officer-involved shootings and critical incidents for other agencies within Salt Lake County, ensuring thorough and consistent investigations in the most serious cases.
