SLCPD Provides Update on Officer Involved Critical Incident, Suspect IdentifiedSALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is providing an update on an officer involved critical incident. According to newly filed court documents, the suspect in this case is identified as 18-year-old Carlos Felipe Ocampo-Flores. As stated in court documents, which are publicly available, at approximately 11p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025, an SLCPD officer attempted a traffic stop near 600 West and North Temple after observing a vehicle driving without headlights and at a high rate of speed. Ocampo-Flores, the accused driver, failed to stop, accelerated through a railroad crossing as the arms were lowering, and ultimately crashed into multiple parked vehicles along 600 West, according to court documents. Investigators have identified at least six damaged vehicles. After the crash, Ocampo-Flores is accused of leaving the scene and abandoning his vehicle. During a search of the car investigators later found suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Search warrants have been obtained to search for additional evidence including other drugs and weapons. About 45 minutes after the crash, a SLCPD officer found Ocampo-Flores near a field two blocks from the crash site. Despite repeated commands to stop, he continued to run and made motions toward his waistband, leading an SLCPD officer to discharge his firearm, striking the suspect. According to court documents, Ocampo-Flores remained combative after being shot and reportedly threatening to harm officers and their families, throwing objects, and resisting arrest. Officers deployed a Taser to bring him into custody. While being treated by emergency medical personnel, Ocampo-Flores allegedly threatened paramedics and attempted to assault them. Salt Lake City Fire and Gold Cross paramedics took Ocampo-Flores to the hospital. Ocampo-Flores remains under hospital guard. His injuries are no longer life threatening. One SLCPD officer sustained minor injuries during the encounter. No other injuries have been reported. Upon his release from the hospital, Ocampo-Flores will be booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges that include failure to respond to an officer’s signal to stop, assault on a peace officer, assault on emergency medical providers, possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving, interfering with a peace officer, and other traffic-related offenses. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos. The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change. ### |
