SLCPD Urges Gun Owners to Properly Secure Weapons and Document Serial Numbers

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is reminding community members to properly secure their firearms and write down the serial numbers for their guns.

Each month the SLCPD investigates approximately three firearms stolen from cars, usually when the firearm is left unsecured.

Only half of the stolen guns can be entered into the NCIC database because the owner never recorded the gun’s serial number.

Properly and safely storing firearms, especially in cars, is not only responsible, it can protect lives.

Without a serial number, a stolen gun can’t be traced or flagged. That missing information can make it easier for your gun to circulate on the street or be used in a crime.

Providing law enforcement a serial number for a stolen firearm improves the chance of recovery, builds a stronger criminal case and protects public safety.

 Safely Storing Your Firearm:

  • Storage methods include keyed locks, combination locks, lock boxes and firearm safes.
  • Keep the keys out of reach of children and where others cannot find them.
  • Store ammunition in a separate, securely locked container.
  • Use a firearm safety device such as a trigger lock or a cable lock.
  • Recording a serial number is simple and free. Download a form to record serial numbers here.
  • Take pictures of firearms, as well as their serial numbers and model numbers.
  • Do not keep the serial numbers in the same place as the firearms.
