SLCPD Initiates Officer Involved Critical Incident (OICI) Protocol
SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) initiated the officer involved critical incident (OICI) protocol.
The following contains preliminary information and is a summarization of the facts known to the department at the time of release. There are several investigations underway related to this incident. As those investigations proceed, additional information may develop that could result in some of this information becoming out of date.
“Early this morning, our officers responded to what appeared to be a life-threatening domestic violence call,” said SLCPD Chief Brian Redd. “Our officers responded to stop a volatile situation and to protect the lives of a woman and her children inside.”
“We will continue to support everyone involved as the investigation moves forward and will share additional information when appropriate,” Chief Redd added.
Based on the preliminary investigation, this incident began around 12:13 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, when officers responded to a residence near Judith Street and Hudson Avenue.
Because this is a domestic violence incident, the SLCPD is not publicly releasing the exact address. Media are asked to respectfully avoid identifying the home at this time to allow for next-of-kin notifications and safety planning for those living at the home.
Based on the preliminary investigation, officers responded after a woman called 9-1-1 and reported her ex-husband, a 42-year-old man, was breaking into her home in violation of a court-issued protective order.
The 9-1-1 caller reportedly told SLC911 that the suspect had previously threatened to kill her and was now inside the residence. The woman and two children – both teenagers – reportedly hid in a bedroom while remaining on the phone with SLC911.
The 9-1-1 caller also reported smelling gasoline. The source of the gasoline remains under investigation.
Officers and SLC911 coordinated with the Salt Lake City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance, requesting them to stage nearby.
Officers entered the home to intervene and to stop the threat. During the incident, at least two officers discharged their firearms.
Officers and paramedics provided aid, but the suspect died on scene.
The woman and two children were not physically injured.
“We also want to recognize the emergency call taker in this case, who did a remarkable job under a lot of pressure,” said Chief Redd. “Their professionalism and calmness during this critical incident exemplify the outstanding teamwork we share with our partners at SLC911.”
Per department policy, the officer involved critical incident protocol was enacted.
The SLCPD is required, under Utah state law, to invoke the OICI protocol when a case meets the definition of a qualifying OICI incident.
OICI Protocol Team 2, led by the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake, is leading the investigation.
The two involved SLCPD officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard in any OICI.
Pursuant to SLC City Code, the SLCPD will release body-worn camera footage within 10-business days.
A SLCPD Public Information Officer (PIO) is on scene and will provide a briefing around 4:30 a.m.
Media staging is at 1100 East and Hudson Avenue. Please do not use Judith Street as a pathway for law enforcement vehicles is needed.
The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
