SLCPD Warns Hyundai and Kia Owners to Be Aware of Recent Thefts, Attempted Thefts
SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is once again warning community members who drive Hyundai and Kia vehicles to be aware of a rise in thefts and attempted thefts targeting these makes. These incidents are primarily occurring overnight or during the early morning hours, with suspects focusing on Hyundai and Kia cars and SUVs. Between April 26 and July 5, 2025, SLCPD’s Crime Intelligence and Analysis Unit, in coordination with the SLCPD Auto Theft Squad, has identified at least 44 reported cases of theft or attempted theft involving Hyundai or Kia vehicles. Most of these cases have occurred west of Redwood Road between 1300 North and North Temple Street. Several others have been reported near 1925 West North Temple Street. In many cases, suspects are gaining illegal entry by damaging the door handle – most often on the driver’s side – or by breaking a window. If you own a Hyundai or Kia, SLCPD encourages you to check the links below for important information and security updates from the manufacturers: For Hyundai click Here. For Kia click Here. The SLCPD also urges community members to take the following steps to help prevent vehicle theft:
· Never leave your car running and unattended. Even vehicles with remote start systems can still be damaged by suspects attempting to gain entry. · Do not leave keys or key fobs inside your vehicle, even for a short time. · Be aware that suspects may use tools and technology capable of cloning key fobs. · Report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 9-1-1. The SLCPD remains committed to investigating these crimes and helping owners protect their property.
