SLCPD Investigating Deadly Shooting in Sugar House

SALT LAKE CITY —  The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad is investigating a deadly shooting in a Sugar House neighborhood.

This investigation started at 12:18 a.m., on Saturday, September 6, 2025, when officers responded to reports of a shooting at 1300 East Wilson Ave.

Officers arrived and immediately discovered a 20-year-old man with critical injuries from multiple gunshot wounds.

Gold Cross and Salt Lake City Fire responded. Gold Cross transported the victim to an area hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts from first responders and hospital staff, the man died from his injuries.

The on duty watch commander requested help from detectives assigned to the Homicide Squad and Crime Lab Technicians.

The preliminary investigation revealed two groups got into an argument which escalated into a physical fight. During the fight, 24-year-old Cesar Gonzalez Juarez pulled out a firearm and fired multiple shots at the victim.

Police took Cesar Gonzalez Juarez into custody shortly after the shooting. Juarez was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on homicide related charges.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

The SLCPD Homicide Squad will work with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the victim’s name, age, cause of death and to notify next-of-kin.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad is Utah’s only full-time dedicated homicide unit. The squad investigates all homicides in the city, along with attended and unattended deaths, suspicious deaths, suicides, and missing persons cases. The team also handles officer-involved shootings and critical incidents for other agencies within Salt Lake County, ensuring thorough and consistent investigations in the most serious cases.

No further information on this case is being released. Neither the PIO nor the On-Duty Watch Commander are available for interviews.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
