SLCPD Gang Unit Arrests 19-Year-Old Involved in Glendale Neighborhood ShootingSALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit safely arrested a 19-year-old accused of being involved in a shooting that injured a 55-year-old woman in the Glendale neighborhood. This investigation started at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2024, when SLC911 received information about a shooting near Concord Street and California Avenue. Officers arrived and learned two people approached a house and started shooting into it. At least one of the rounds fired traveled into the home, hitting the 55-year-old woman. Paramedics took the woman to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Detectives with the SLCPD Gang Unit took over the investigation and developed information about the case. On Monday, August 12, 2024, detectives located Apisai Matelau. Detectives booked Matelau into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one count of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit is essential in combating gang-related crimes. The unit of skilled and highly trained officers and detectives collaborates with patrol divisions and other specialty squads to gather intelligence and prevent gang and gun violence through education, prevention, and enforcement. The unit’s understanding of gang culture allows them to disrupt operations and prevent violence effectively. By working proactively and with various partners, the Gang Unit enhances public safety, fosters community trust, and reduces gang activity in the city.
