SLCPD Provides Update on Central 9th Deadly Shooting

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is providing an update on a deadly shooting, and SWAT callout, which occurred in the Central 9th neighborhood.

This investigation is part of two separate homicide investigations that happened on Friday, November 15, 2024.

This investigation began at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2024, when SLC911 received information about a shooting that just occurred near 800 South Park Street.

Officers arrived and found a 21-year-old man with critical injuries. The 21-year-old man died on scene, despite lifesaving efforts by first responders.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the 21-year-old man and a 53-year-old man were outside when a shooting occurred.

The specific circumstances or motive of the shooting are not known.

Officers believe the 53-year-old man went back inside his apartment after the shooting. Officers tried communicating with him, but he did not engage.

Due to the circumstances, the on-scene incident commander requested the assistance of the SLCPD SWAT Team and crisis negotiators.

Officers obtained a court-authorized search warrant to enter the 53-year-old man’s apartment.

After several hours of trying to communicate with the 53-year-old man, using all available methods, SWAT officers entered the apartment and found the 53-year-old man dead inside.

The specific circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation. However, this appears to be an isolated incident.

There is no reason to believe there is any threat to the community and currently, detectives are not looking for any outstanding individuals.

Now that the tactical portion of this incident is done, homicide detectives will begin processing the scene.

The SLCPD’s Homicide Squad will work with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the name, cause of death, and to notify next-of-kin of both individuals.

Anyone with information on this case, including having photos or video, is asked to call 801-799-3000 or submit an anonymous tip using the City Protect App and reference case number 24-270954.

The SLCPD’s K9 Squad provided vital assistance on this case that helped patrol officers with their initial investigation.

A photo from the scene is being released. Media may use these photos with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.

Note: Media is asked to remove references to the address of 828 South Park Street. Although used as the dispatch address for the call for service, it is not affiliated with this incident. Because next-of-kin notifications haven’t been complete, the specific address of occurrence is not being released, at this time.
