SLCPD Provides Community Update on East Central Neighborhood Police Activity
SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is providing community members with an update on police activity that occurred in the East Central neighborhood near the University of Utah campus that resulted in the discharge of a firearm after an aggressive dog charged an officer.
This investigation began around 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2025, when SLC911 received multiple reports of a person with a weapon near 300 South 1300 East.
Witnesses told officers the suspect claimed to have multiple firearms and was in someone’s backyard without permission. No firearm was visibly seen by community members.
Officers found the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Jeffrey Chadwick Jackson.
Upon containing Jackson, he ran from officers.
During the chase, Jackson’s dog became aggressive and attempted to bite an officer. In response to the immediate threat, the officer discharged their firearm, striking the dog.
Following the incident, Jackson continued running away. Officers set up a containment.
The injured dog also ran away. Officers later found the dog with a non-life-threatening injury to its back paw. Salt Lake County Animal Control responded and took custody of the dog for further care.
During the investigation, the University of Utah Department of Public Safety informed SLCPD officers that Jackson was involved in a stolen bike case within their jurisdiction.
Despite an exhaustive search into the early evening, officers did not find Jackson.
Around midnight on Sunday, March 2, 2025, a community member called 9-1-1 and reported seeing a man near 600 East 400 South. The community member told dispatchers he received a public safety message from the University of Utah that contained a description of the suspect who ran from SLCPD officers.
SLCPD officers responded and confirmed the man’s identity as Jackson.
SLCPD officers safely arrested Jackson.
Officers booked Jackson into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of felony theft, which are associated with the stolen bike case being investigated by the University of Utah Department of Public Safety.
Charges will be screened against Jackson for fleeing and trespassing as well.
Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
