SALT LAKE CITY— The Salt Lake City Police Department is now taking applications for Citizens Academy, a free workshop that brings officers and citizens together to discuss the law enforcement policies and practices that guide the department.

There are 25 seats available for the three-day academy, which is designed to give participants an inside look at the job of a police officer. Participants should be prepared to attend class at the following times:

  • Wednesday, June 11, 6–9 p.m.,
  • Thursday, June 12, 6–9 p.m.,
  • Friday, June 13, 5–10 p.m.

Instructors will cover the structure of the department and unit responsibilities, as well as run attendees through the same PRISM scenarios and use-of-force options used to train new recruits. Hands-on opportunities will include a K9 apprehension demonstration, speed enforcement with the Motors Unit, and firearms shooting with SWAT.

The Police Department’s Training Unit will fill available seats in the order received as long as applicants are:

  • 18 years of age or older,
  • live or work in Salt Lake City proper,
  • and pass a basic background check.
