Sandy and Salt Lake City Police Department to co-host Explorer Police Academy June 12 through June 18, 2016.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City and Sandy City Police Department will be training the next generation of officers at the Utah Explorer Police Academy.  This year’s academy will be the largest youth Explorer academy ever held in the state of Utah.

The Academy is an intense, week-long police training involving youth from the ages of 14 to 20 years old. Explorer Academy youth participants will receive hands-on real-life training in, traffic stops, criminal law, hand-to-hand combat and making arrests. They all suit up to be attacked by a K-9, feel what it’s like to be shot by a Taser, and respond to an active shooter call, which will be held Thursday. They learn how to work together as a team to solve the problem at hand.

These groups of explorers are unique in that they represent several different countries – between the two explorer posts; over eight different languages are spoken. Over half of the Explorers are female and minorities, a trend we hope to continue.

This academy will help a future generation of citizens and taxpayers understand the importance of law enforcement and will nurture a budding crop of future officers.  Over 100 volunteers have given of their time to make this academy a huge success for the youth involved.
