SLCPD Detectives Book Three Child Abuse Suspects into Jail

SALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Special Victims Unit have booked a man and two women into jail on 19 counts each of Aggravated Child Abuse.

On Wednesday July 13, 2022, members of law enforcement located and later arrested 32-year-old Laurie Hackett, 31-year-old Randee Coon and 52-year-old Kerri Pavlica.

This investigation started at 5:20 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, when SLCPD received information that two children, one six years old and the other 17 years old, were being transported to a local hospital with multiple, serious injuries.

During the investigation, officers and detectives learned the two children had been in the care of Hackett, Coon, and Pavlica for approximately the last four weeks.

During that time Hackett, Coon and Pavlica all participated, or were aware of, the assaults and abuse to the victims.

Doctors are continuing to evaluate the two victims. Their injuries are extensive and will require further care from medical professionals.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s Special Victims unit is responsible for reviewing and coordinating all child abuse and neglect cases and sexual assault and abuse cases in Salt Lake City. The unit is comprised of detectives who have specialized training in investigating crimes against children, sexual assaults and are deeply familiar with victim advocacy and the medical and legal issues involved with these cases.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
