SLCPD Competes in Police Motor Rodeo, Wins Several Awards

SALT LAKE CITY — This weekend, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Motor Squad won several awards after competing in the first annual Wasatch Front Police Motor Rodeo in Lehi, Utah.

“This was a phenomenal event, and I am very proud of our Motors,” said Chief Mike Brown. “They are, hands down, among the best skilled riders in the country. Riding a motorcycle for police purposes takes an incredible amount of training. Our Motor Squad are highly valued members of our police family and can be the most visible part of our department during parades, large gatherings and other community events.”

The SLCPD Motor Squad saddled up and competed against police agencies throughout Utah and regional departments.

After a Friday full of practice, the motor officers’ skills were put to the test on Saturday. Events consisted of a timed obstacle course, slow ride race, tethered two-officer race, and a four-officer obstacle course race.

The SLCPD Motor Squad finished in the top three or higher in all events, with two officers earning first place in the main event and slow race.

All profits from the Motor Rodeo went to the Special Olympics Utah.

Established in 1909, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Motor Squad is one of the oldest in the country. The department’s Motor Squad works to ensure the safety of all road users by proactively conducting education and enforcement operations to remind road users of traffic safety laws.

The squad provides traffic escorts for dignitaries and helps with security, logistics and community engagement during large gatherings and special events.
