SLCPD Homicide Detectives Arrest 2nd Suspect in Murder InvestigationSALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department announced the arrest of a 21-year-old man as part of an ongoing murder investigation. Furthermore, to aid with this investigation, the SLCPD is releasing the identity and two photos of another suspect, believed to be the shooter in this criminal homicide. This investigation started at 3:19 p.m. on Saturday September 3, 2022, when SLCPD responded to a shooting near 150 South West Temple Street. Today, with help from members of the SLCPD’s SWAT Team, the SLCPD Liberty Bike Squad, and patrol officers, detectives with the SLCPD’s Homicide Squad arrested Joshua Riak following a traffic stop on Modesto Avenue, just west of Modesto Park. Riak will be booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one count of Murder and one count of Aggravated Robbery. Detectives continue to ask anyone with information about this case to call 801-799-3000. It is alleged that Riak and 22-year-old Deng Buk aided and abetted 18-year-old Nogolweit “Nunu” Kug in the shooting death of 41-year-old Deliford Knight. As previously released, detectives have confirmed Knight and his friends flew to Salt Lake City from Florida to attend a sneaker convention at the Salt Palace Convention Center. According to information provided to detectives, Knight and his friends have traveled to similar conventions in different states where they engaged in betting matches to defraud people out of money. It is alleged one of the suspects lost money to Knight and became angry. The suspects followed Knight out onto West Temple. While on West Temple, the three suspects started fighting with Knight, assaulting him, and tried to get back the lost money. At some point, Kug, while in the presence of Buk and Riak, took out a gun and shot Knight. It is further alleged Kug and another suspect took items out of Knight’s pockets, including a cell phone and cash. The suspects all left the area. Detectives believe Kug may have left Utah, but his location, and method of travel, is unknown. Kug should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on his location should call 9-1-1 immediately. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. No further information on this case is being released. Neither the PIO nor the On-Duty Watch Commander are available for interviews. ———————————– Photos: Nogolweit “Nunu” Kug. ### |
