SLCPD Arrest Man For Stabbing Two People on Separate DaysSALT LAKE CITY — Over the weekend, the Salt Lake City Police Department arrested a 32-year-old man for his alleged involvement in two stabbings. “Our detectives are working around the clock on this case to see if we can establish a motive,” said Chief Mike Brown. “Right now, it appears these attacks are random, targeting members of our homeless community. The suspect himself is homeless. We know the people who are experiencing homelessness can be victimized at disproportional rates to others. Our department is committed to helping to ensure the safety of everyone in our community. I appreciate the work of our officers and detectives who have arrested this suspect.” The first investigation started at 8:16 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2022 when SLC911 received a call about someone being stabbed near 550 West 300 South. Responding officers found a 38-year-old woman with a non-life-threatening stab wound. Officers immediately provided medical aid. Firefighters with the Salt Lake City Fire Department responded. Gold Cross Ambulance took the woman to the hospital. Doctors have since released her. During the initial investigation, officers spoke with witnesses and gathered information about the suspect, later identified as Mario Fresques. Officers checked the area for Fresques but could not find him. The second investigation started at 5:07 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2022 when SLC911 received a call about a man who had been stabbed near 300 South 500 West. A SLCPD patrol sergeant found a 39-year-old man with multiple stab wounds and immediately started to provide medical aid. Firefighters with the Salt Lake City Fire Department responded and assisted with medical care. Gold Cross Ambulance took the man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The man is now in stable condition and expected to survive. Officers safely took Fresques into custody during their investigation. Detectives with the SLCPD Robbery Squad responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. Officers booked Fresques into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on two counts of Aggravated Assault – one count for the September 11th stabbing and one count for the September 17th stabbing. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. There is no other information to release at this time. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos. ### |
