SLCPD Provides Update to Aggravated Assault Investigation

SALT LAKE CITY — Overnight, the Salt Lake City Police Department booked 22-year-old Angel Tinajero, into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail following a several hour search of a Rose Park neighborhood.

Tinajero is charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault, one count of Burglary of a Dwelling, one count of Kidnapping, one count of Purchasing/Transferring/Possession/Use of a Firearm by a Restricted Person, and four counts of Felony Discharge of a Firearm.

This investigation started at 11:17 a.m. on Sunday, December 18, 2022, when SLC911 received information about a shooting near 1000 North American Beauty Drive.

Officers responded and learned the victim caught Tinajero trying to break into their car. When the victim confronted Tinajero, he pulled out a gun and fired a round toward the victim.

The bullet ended up in the victim’s home. No injuries were reported.

Tinajero immediately ran from the scene. The victim followed Tinajero. While being followed, Tinajero stopped and fired three more times. No injuries were reported.

Tinajero is accused of unlawfully entering a detached garage near of 1100 West Sterling Drive.

Officers learned Tinajero left the garage and then entered a home mid-block near 1100 West Sterling Drive. Detectives spoke with the homeowner and learned she was sitting on her couch when a man, later identified as Tinajero, suddenly came inside without permission.

The homeowner described Tinajero as very nervous and acting strange.

The homeowner, an elderly woman, described feeling trapped and told officers she had no way to leave the house. Tinajero told the homeowner not to call police.

Tinajero remained inside the house for more than two hours while police outside set up an extensive perimeter.

During this incident, the SLCPD restricted access around the following locations for public safety: 1200 West to American Beauty Drive and 1000 North to 800 North.

The on-duty watch commander requested the assistance of a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter, SLCPD drones, the SLCPD SWAT Team and the SLCPD K9 Squad.

At approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday December 18, 2022, an SLCPD sergeant coordinating the perimeter saw a man walking in a yard near 1100 West Talisman Drive. The suspect matched the physical description of Tinajero.

The man appeared to be acting suspiciously. The SLCPD sergeant stopped and spoke with the man, later determined to be Tinajero.

During the investigation, detectives learned Tinajero changed his clothes while inside the home on West Sterling Drive.

After safely arresting Tinajero, a SLCPD K9 Unit conducted an article search looking for any evidence Tinajero ditched while running away. Officers found several pieces of evidence, including a firearm.

Detectives are asking people in the area to search their properties to see if they spot any bullet holes anywhere on their property, including homes, vehicles, and landscaping.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
