SLCPD Investigating Stabbing, Shooting; Community Assistance Requested

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is requesting help from community members as detectives investigate a stabbing and an unrelated shooting in downtown.

The stabbing investigation started at 2:41 a.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2023, when SLC911 took a call about a stabbing at 32 East Exchange Place. When officers got on scene, they found a large crowd leaving and a person on the ground with a critical injury.

Officers provided lifesaving efforts and paramedics and Salt Lake City firefighters transported the victim to the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

At approximately 3:48 a.m., while officers were investigating the stabbing, they heard gunfire coming from their west. Officers notified SLC911 and started looking for a crime scene.

At 3:52 a.m., officers attempted to stop a person possibly connected to the shooting near 60 West Market Street, but that person ran away. Additional officers responded and started looking for the suspect.

Officers found a window at the Orrin G. Hatch United States Courthouse damaged by gunfire. During their search, an officer saw someone matching the description of the shooter near 600 South Main Street.

Officers quickly locked down the area.

At approximately 4:30 a.m., hospital staff called SLC911 to let them know a person walked into the emergency room with a stab wound. Officers believe that person was stabbed during the fight at 32 East Exchange Place and left the area before officers and paramedics arrived. This person’s injuries are not life-threatening.

At 4:33 a.m. officers located the shooting suspect and took him safely into custody. With the assistance of the South Salt Lake Police Department, officers recovered a firearm believed to be connected to the shooting.

“Our officers did a remarkable job tonight,” said SLCPD Chief Mike Brown. “They are trained to remain calm and focused. These are high-stress situations, and I’m proud of our officers, sergeants, and watch commanders. They quickly and safely collected and analyzed rapidly incoming information, coordinated resources, and did everything they could to help ensure the best possible response.”

No names related to either the stabbing or shooting are being released.

Anyone who has information, including video, photos, or who has seen social media posts related to either incident, is asked to call 801-799-3000 and ask to speak with an officer.

Several photos taken from the scenes are being released. Media may use these photos with proper credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
