SLCPD Invokes Officer Involved Critical Incident (OICI) Protocol

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) requested the assistance of an outside agency, under the officer involved critical incident (OICI) protocol, to investigate a police shooting.

The following contains preliminary information and is a summarization of the facts known to the department at the time of release. There are several investigations underway related to this incident. As those investigations proceed, additional information may develop that could result in some of this information becoming out of date.

The SLCPD is required, under Utah state law, to invoke the OICI protocol when a case meets the definition of a qualifying OICI incident.

“Our police officers are highly trained,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. “Whenever there is a threat to our community or our officers, I have absolute confidence in their ability to act with speed and courage to eliminate the danger and protect everyone. This appears to have been yet again another rapidly unfolding, life-threatening, and dangerous situation. Our officers have my full support.”

Based on the preliminary investigation, a SLCPD officer conducted a traffic stop at 1:41 a.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2025, near 375 South 765 West.

During the investigation, a man not involved in the traffic stop approached the officer on scene. That person, a 32-year-old man, had a weapon.

During the incident, the officer shot the 32-year-old suspect.

No officers were injured.

Paramedics took the suspect to the hospital in critical condition.

The driver from the initial traffic stop is not considered a suspect in the OICI.

There were no other injuries reported.

The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.

A SLCPD Public Information Officer (PIO) is on scene and will provide a briefing at 4 a.m.

Two photos from the scene are being released. Media may use these photos with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
