SLCPD Investigating Frosted Windshield Crash, Provides Safety Tips For Winter Driving
SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is reminding community members about their responsibility to maintain a clear windshield after investigating an early morning crash where the driver failed to properly clear his windshield from frost. As the weather continues to get colder, the SLCPD urges community members to make sure their windshields and windows are clear of any frost, snow, or other debris. Drivers are urged to keep their windshield wipers in functioning order and adjusting schedules to allow the proper time to clear off windshields to make sure their visibility will not be obstructed. At 8:32 a.m., on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, SLCPD officers responded to the area of 1350 East 1700 South on reports of a rollover crash. When officers arrived on scene, they immediately noticed the driver’s front windshield was nearly covered with frost. Based on the preliminary investigation, SLCPD officers determined the man, while driving his SUV with the windshield frost covered, may have had a medical condition. The man crashed into a parked car, causing the man’s SUV to tip onto its side. The crash did not result in any serious injuries. Paramedics took the man to the hospital. Drivers are reminded it is their responsibility to keep their windshield clear. Utah law states it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with any debris, frost, or other substance that materially obstructs the operator’s view. A windshield covered in frost that hasn’t been adequately cleared could materially obstruct a driver’s view, making it unsafe and potentially in violation of traffic laws requiring unobstructed visibility. Drivers are reminded to adjust their schedules to allow enough time to clear off their windshields.
