SLCPD Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) Seize Nearly 1,000 Fentanyl PillsSALT LAKE CITY — Detectives with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) recently seized nearly 1,000 fentanyl pills as part of an ongoing firearms and drug-related investigation. On March 7, 2025, the SLCPD’s SWAT Team, safely executed a search warrant near 700 West North Temple. VCAT detectives had information to believe, the suspect, Luis Ricardo Chavez-Rodriguez, had access to firearms—prompting the need for the SLCPD’s SWAT Team to help ensure the safety of everyone involved. During the investigation, VCAT detectives seized approximately 1,000 fentanyl pills. According to court documents, detectives developed probable cause to believe Chavez-Rodriguez was involved in suspected drug distribution. Detectives booked Chavez-Rodriguez into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail a charge of being in unlawful possession of a control substance with intent to distribute and outstanding warrants. Because this is an ongoing investigation, no further details can be released. Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos. The information contained in this news release is based on a preliminary review of the details available to the Salt Lake City Police Department. As the investigation progresses, information may change.
